Over the years I’ve been infatuated with the psalms. They display a raw angst and honesty as well as a reckless pursuit of God. They remind me that I’m not alone, that this life is hard, and yet God meets us in the mess. This first psalm stands as a gateway to the other 149 psalms, and I’ve wanted to put it to music for years. It speaks to humanity alike, both exposing the folly of living under our own rule while rejoicing in the goodness of living under the gracious care and guidance of God and His words. It also points us to Jesus who perfectly lived this psalm out in His life, death, & resurrection. My prayer is that this psalm would burrow its way deeper into your heart and life as you listen, that your affection for God and His good Word would grow, and that we would indeed be like trees planted by streams of water, fruitful and alive.
